Charming and well written description of childhood in pre-war Arbroath. Evocative memories of watching the “Smokies” being made near the harbour, of gentle giants, the Clydesdales pulling cartloads of coal, sawdust on the butchers floor, brown paper packages, wide skies dancing with the Northern Lights and yet all was not roses for the young girl. Helen Mudie’s vivid description of a childhood confinement in the “fever hospital” is particularly moving.
An appealing book bringing back many memories of Scottish life in the 1950’s.
