Description
Gregor MacDonald, a native of the Isle of Harris, was recruited in the 4th Territorial Army Battalion of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders in 1939. It was not long before the battalion was in the thick of action in France and the retreat and surrender of the 51st Highland Division at St Valery. Then a prisoner of war, Gregor MacDonald decided to make a break at the first opportunity and he succeeded in escaping during the march from the front.
This personal account records Gregor’s route through occupied territory, Vichy France through Spain to Gibraltar. His harrowing experiences en-route, especially in the Spanish jail of Zaragosa, leaves the reader in awe of his indomitable spirit.
